Three Night Passes pulled

Anyone for a midsummer night’s walk?

Tonight is the shortest night of the year, but three athletes have pulled Night Passes today.

In 14th place, Tobias Grossrubatscher (ITA2) is currently serving a 12-hour penalty for an airspace infringement near Innsbruck. The penalty ends at 5pm, however, and he’s doubtless keen to claw his way back towards the front of the leading pack. At the moment, the 25-year-old is a sitting duck, with several athletes passing him as he is forced to stay still.

Further back, Willi Cannell (USA2), in 24th, and Thomas Juel Christensen (DNK), in 22nd, have also used their Night Passes. Neither are in danger of elimination when the Axeman next visits the race at 6am on Saturday, but they doubtless want to gain as big an advantage as possible while they still have the energy to hike all night.

The Night Pass allows the athletes to keep moving after the field is forced to pause for the evening at 10.30pm.
