The Roaring Forties

Age and experience counts in the Red Bull X-Alps

The Red Bull X-Alps has got off to a brilliant start, with athletes now well on their way to the second Turnpoint, Wagrain-Kleinarl.

Leading the charge is Toma Coconea (ROU) – one of the most experienced athletes in the race. Behind Coconea is Tobias Grossrubatscher (ITA2), who at 25 is one of the youngest athletes.

The age difference is notable – but it is not unusual. Gavin McClurg (USA1) has been in the leading pack for the whole afternoon, and is 47. Evgenii Griaznov (RUS) is 46 and is also among the leaders.

The oldest athlete in the competition is also clearly one of the boldest. Kaoru Ogisawa (JPN) is 59 and has pulled his Night Pass for tonight. Ogisawa’s team believe this will allow him to reach the Wagrain—Kleinarl Turnpoint tonight.

Youth counts for a lot, but clearly, age and experience also has its place in the race. And at the moment that place is right near the front.
