Red Bull X-Alps is the ultimate adventure race that sees world-class athletes hike and fly their way across the Alps. The race takes place every two years, starting in Salzburg, Austria and continues all the way through to the finish line in Monaco, but there’s a whole lot that happens before the big event.
If you’re a fan of adventure or even an aspiring competitor, there are some key dates and phases that you will need to know for the upcoming race:
Application Phase: July 1 – August 31, 2020
There are many reasons to sign up for Red Bull X-Alps, but at the same time it takes a lot to be an athlete in the world’s toughest adventure race. Experience, previous competitive results and the abilities as a pilot and mountaineer are just a few of the factors that are taken into account.

Athlete’s Announcement: October 14, 2020
Hundreds of motivated applicants, but who makes the cut? Around eight months ahead of the race, the line-up of world class athletes are presented to the world in a gripping reveal that you don’t want to miss. Usually we see a thrilling mix of both newcomers and seasoned pros, but if one thing is for sure, it’s that Race Director Christoph Weber is always full of surprises!!
Route Announcement: March 16, 2021
The announcement of the official route is one of the highlights in the preliminary phase of each edition of the race. National and international press and media gather in the renowned Hangar-7 in Salzburg, Austria to see the curtain fall. Fans from all over the world can join via a dedicated Livestream where the Race Committee explains the details of the route and the challenges that come with it.
Prologue: June 17, 2021
The race before the race! In the Prologue, athletes will have to hike, run, trail run and fly along a pre-defined route of about 35km around Wagrain - Kleinarl (just one hour south of Salzburg) – the three winners will each get one extra Night Pass, an incredibly useful tool for the main race if used strategically. But the Prologue is important for every one – on day 2 of the main race, the Prologue winner will get to start at 5 AM as normal – every other competitor must delay their start by the time they finished behind the winner.
For local fans and media, the Prologue is the perfect place to meet the athletes and see the action up close and personal.
Race Start: June 20, 2021
The day the city of Mozart holds its breath. The statue of the city’s most famous son will look down as athletes from around the world set off on Sunday at 11:30 from the Mozartplatz on a great adventure – the Red Bull X-Alps 2021. A great spectacle for all fans of adventure racing and sports, as the race can be experienced up close - not just at the start line, but also up on the long-standing Turnpoint 1, Gaisberg, where athletes launch one after another into the skies for the first time during their multiday adventure across the Alps.
Every step of the race will be broadcast to a live audience of millions through advanced and interactive monitoring with the Live Tracking feature. As one of the toughest races in the world you don’t want to miss a single second, so stay tuned and prepare yourselves for pure, unadulterated action.
