Simon Oberrauner (AUT2) says whatever Maurer (SUI1), Pinot (FRA1) and Outters (FRA2) can do, he can do better. Oberrauner is taking a very high line at 2800m around the flanks of the Grand Chavalard (2899m) right now. Note the line the athletes take to cross the valley – they follow the east side of the valley north before getting height and turning due west. This is because this is the shortest line – crossing in a diagonal means you have a much longer glide before you hit high ground and rising air again. The valley here is very narrow – the wind speeds up as he funnels through here, making it a difficult place for the athletes to fly.
