On the hunt

Weather is playing a role in the fortunes of the athletes hunting down the Eagle

As Christian Maurer (SUI) heads on foot for Turnpoint 9 Mont Blanc, plenty of athletes are on the hunt. And the variable weather is playing a role in their fortunes. Those leaving Turnpoint 5 Lermoos - Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, for example, are surrounded by rain showers and claps of thunder.

Nick Neynens (NZL1), who is travelling from Turnpoint 5 with Thomas Juel Christensen (DNK) in 21st place, for example, says that ‘it won’t be flyable here for six to eight hours, as bad weather is coming in from the west.’ Those already at Turnpoint 6 Davos, including Toma Coconea (ROU) and Antoine Girard (FRA3) are also on foot.

Further west, however, there’s plenty of flying going on en route to Turnpoint 7 Titlis. On this leg, Tom de Dorlodot (BEL), Simon Oberrauner (AUT2), Manuel Nubel (GER1) and Markus Anders (GER2) are, or have recently been, flying.

The top five are all on the ground, though. Paul Guschlbauer (AUT1) in third, Aaron Durogati (ITA1) in fourth and Patrick von Känel (SUI2) in fifth, still have to reach Titlis, while Maxime Pinot (FRA4) is on his way to Turnpoint 8 Eiger on foot. If this continues, we could see some positions change hands.

As Christensen, in 20th, said: ‘If the athletes at the front get slowed up by bad weather, that could work for us. We’re patient and with good weather forecast for later in the week it might work in our favour.’

Tomorrow´s weather is expected to be variable, too, and will likely stay that way in Switzerland until Saturday. After that, conditions will improve and many athletes should then be able to approach Monaco at speed.
