Long night before the longest day

Pinot’s overnight chase, the battle for third – and the axeman’s next target

Tomorrow is the longest day and while all the athletes will be feeling the burn in the morning, some will be more tired than others. Maxime Pinot (FRA4), in particular, faces a long night. As the rest of the field stops moving and beds down at 10.30pm, the French Rookie will be using one of his two Night Passes to try and hunt down race leader Christian Maurer (SUI1).

Maurer and Pinot have travelled around the same distance so far today – 126km and 121km, respectively – and the latter remains 50km behind. Nevertheless, the 27-year-old is an accomplished ultra-runner and has the endurance to keep going. He doesn’t need to overtake Maurer at this point, but he must stay in touch.

Even sizeable leads can vanish quickly in this race. As has happened so often already, a 50km advantage can be lost in just an hour if the chasing athlete has the aerial advantage.

Meanwhile, Aaron Durogati (ITA1) and Paul Guschlbauer (AUT1) are fighting out for third place in the shadow of Turnpoint 7 Titlis. After a slow start, Durogati is going from strength to strength and a podium finish is well within his grasp.

At the back of the field, Dominika Kasieczko (POL) is in last place and almost certainly faces elimination at 6am tomorrow. Even so, with just minutes before racing is paused at 10.30pm, she is giving everything she’s got to reach Turnpoint 4 Kronplatz.
