2011 route throws up new challenges

More turnpoints, longer course

Turnpoint 1: the Gaisberg overlooking Salzburg
A welcome return for the Dachstein, Austria, turnpoint 2
Piz Palü, Switzerland, is the new turnpoint 5
 Turnpoint 6: the Matterhorn, Switzerland
Goal: Monaco. Who will be first?

Organiser Hannes Arch and his team have devised a new route with eight turnpoints in Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France, which is anticipated to make things much harder for the athletes.

After 2009's successful start, things will kick off in the centre of Salzburg, Austria. The Gaisberg returns as turnpoint 1, but then the athletes must make their way to the Dachstein, scene of the 2003, 05 and 07 start.

The Grossglockner is next, and then the race moves into Italy with turnpoint 4, the magnificent Tre Cime.

Piz Palü in Switherland is turnpoint 5 and the Matterhorn makes a second appearance as turnpoint 6. Mont Blanc, France is turnpoint 7 and then athletes head to the coast to Mont Gros (turnpoint 8) and finally goal, Monaco.

Check the trailer video for an overview of the new course and the route page for full details.

"It’s an extremely tricky new course," said Hannes Arch. "I believe it will really make athletes think hard about their tactics."
